You use a "flashcard". I had several, but the best one I had was the "Acekard 2i" which was made for the Nintendo DSi.

Basically it's a flashcard the size of a DS game -- but you can plug a Micro-SD card (the size of a SIM card) into it with whatever you want. You can run homebrew games, emulators and Nintendo DS ROMs. However, I do not condone pirating DS games. I just found it useful because I was able to take all of my Nintendo DS games and store them on a single card.
But video game piracy laws state if you keep the ROM longer than 24 hours -- it's illegal. So you can download games you don't already own and try them out. Which saved me a TON of money since I wouldn't waste it on games I wasn't keen on.
I really liked flashcards because I developed several DS games with fellow members of a homebrew community known as "GBAtemp". And we developed a new "Action Replay" like clone for the DSi software. So it was like having an Action Replay, all your games and homebrew on a single card.
Anyways, yeah! Flashcards.
