I played Dogfight, on the original 111th Falcon Squad, in 2016, for about 5 years. I believe. I forgot my title, but it was high. I played under the name:
Wumper.

This elite game is a little different. When I shot into the plane box, nothing happens. I can shoot 50 times, and nothing happens. Is there some trick to shooting down a
Plane. I notice when I get close, the box disappears. But even if you are shooting right directly at the plane, most of the time, I get shot down.

In the old game, I shot down everyone. Except some of the very best player like Kevy,

Any answers that could assist me, would be appreciated.

Yeah, it's +- what Nebular said. One of the biggest differences of this game compared to Dogfight is the "bullet drop". Bullets don't follow a straight line; now they fall because of gravity. This forces you to aim above the enemy aircraft (that square you mentioned is very useful for that) if you want to hit it.

Depending on your bullet drop (the game calls it "bullet distance"), you'll need to aim higher or lower. In this post at Wolf Pack's Den one of my squad mates made a little tutorial about it (LOOK AT THE ORANGE SPOT, not at the crosshair), I hope it's helpful for you.
Thanks to [Ñ] THE BLACK DRAGONS and Montymor for accepting me in such a big family. ¡Volar con honor, no rendirse jamás!

I agree with my buddy, you do have to aim higher than the enemy aircraft itself to score hits, but there’s a bit more to it than that.
Bullet trajectory also depends on the angle you fly at - for example, if you point downwards the bullets go directly down, as that’s the direction of gravity, but if you go up and shoot the curve is much sharper.
Also, one more thing to know of - Leading
Leading, or deflection is the practice of shooting ahead of a moving target, so the target flies into the bullets or they meet at a point. It’s only needed at long distances and if the target moves enough so the bullet takes more time to reach
.
Here’s a visual representation of what I mean; if I aim the white circles directly at this bomber, they’d miss by a lot. However if I aim the white crosshair somewhere within this red circle I marked, the bullets will hit and I score the kill

Very helpful. In the old days, as a Falcon, we all helped the young guns. A bunch of Gentlemen. I notice some old names, are still around.

Again, thanks, the slide was very helpful.
