Hey Loonies. Sorry, but I'm not very active, but I've been very active lol. I have deployed to Afghanistan as a Military Advisor to the UN. Good money but no weapons. WTF was I thinking?!? Anyway, I made it to Jalalabad around ten days ago after a week-long marathon via UAE and Kabul. The drive from Kabul to Jalalabad was spectacular. Snow capped mountains and steep valleys - even the occasional abandoned Soviet T-55 tank as a reminder to those who might follow.

The UN base here in Jalalabad is small but secure, nestled between the provincial governor’s compound and the regional police HQ. We are inside a converted government building. Our accommodation is very comfortable with gardens, verandas and orange trees, which makes it all very nice and green, but basically we are inside a 10m high blast wall which makes it more like a prison. We only venture out when on liaison and observation tasks (using armoured Land Cruisers). There is no shopping, sight seeing or leisure activities. We have 18 foreign UN staff here and 20 guards. A few days a week an old guy cooks for us all, and essentials are delivered, but for the most part we cook for ourselves. Veggie curry and afghan bread last night – Not bad. Our Gurkha security guards, far more capable than most, slaughtered a sheep this morning and have invited me to dinner tonight. Can't say no - it's a cultural thing.

The Afghan election is on 05 Apr, and the Taliban fighters are out in force to disrupt the process by all means possible. This base has already been attacked and, as I type, our UN base In Kabul is getting whacked. The next few weeks will be a bumpy ride, but I feel reasonably relaxed and confident, though never complacent.

Have a great weekend. Keep the squad honest and don't ever be pushed around by people who think they're important.

Ronnie

Any chance of pictures of the snow capped mountains and abandoned soviet tank? I'm guessing that's a lot to ask but I'm a big 'picture in the head' kinda guy and gardens with orange trees wasn't what I expected!

If you have Ghurkas for guards then I trust you are In great hands. I'm totally amazed that you are able to share all of that, but on the flip side, thanks for doing so. Very informative and entertaining too. Anyway, be safe and come by my place if and when you can. Drinks will be on me.

Jack, don't be amazed at what I can share. This is the UN, not the flamin' CIA! You made a similar, more pointed comment when I questioned Duckwing's story. Believe me, everything I say is unclassified or already in the public domain.

Ronnie emailed these for me to post due to technical difficulties at his end.

The following is his post.

1. Mountains East of Kabul, which run through Pakistan to the Hamalayas - no wonder it took so long to find Osama Bin Hidin'

2. My security escort - Really? How safe did I feel?

3. Abandned Soviet tank on the Jalalabad Road. One of yours Vladimir? Of course the Americans wouldn't make the same mistake as you lol.

No hidden meanings here. I'm happy that you can share your experiences as they are happening. I have no idea how tight lipped you have to be...

The no weapons part of the deal makes me cringe. I don't know if there is money that green. I thought long and hard about applying to KBR when they were in their heyday in Iraq, but I just couldn't get past not being able to shoot back. (True story) In my imagination at least, I figure kids there are given an AK in the delivery room when they are born. All I can say is be careful, and you are braver than me.

The pilot has been named as a new member at another squad this morning  , we wish him well.
But on a happier note, I have my eyes on a new guy, he's green, he's mean and he's a European killing machine. If anyone fitting that description pops past, please say hi.
